Knitted Knockers Knitting Circle for Mastectomy Patients

get-attachment[1]

I recently received an invitation to join a group. I receive invitations to join groups often but this one caught my eye. I was intrigued so I checked it out. This is what I found.

Knitted Knockers Knitting Circle for Mastectomy Patients (click to check it out and/or join us)

“Many women cannot afford the upfront cost the government requires to get their mastectomy bra’s,… and when they do, a lot find them too heavy or uncomfortable to wear. Knitted and Crocheted Knockers is an alternative to this problem. This group is looking for men and women who love to knit or crochet to make knitted knockers for women who cannot wear or cannot afford traditional mastectomy bras. If you would like to help or would like one or a pair please join and make someone’s day by giving them their breast(s) back and a smile on their face.”

So one brave woman who is living with breast cancer stepped forward and started this group on Facebook. I joined and I am glad I did. I haven’t crocheted any yet but will gladly give my time to do this. I never even thought about women having to buy these products. They even give these “made with love” items free just for asking. How much better could it be? I am so impressed.

The main page for the knitted knockers is here. It gives more info if you need it. I am hoping that I can find women like me who would love to share their crocheting talent and ability to help these brave women who need us. We can do this! I am so excited. Please check this out.

Photo: Please share this group with as many people as possible. We are making knitted or crocheted knockers for women who have had single mastectomies and bilateral, so we can put a smile on their face after their fight for life! Let's show them we care!

https://www.facebook.com/groups/knittedknockers/Crocheted_Knockers_10-1-13Crocheted_Knockers_10-1-13

TwainFest

Everyone loves an outdoor event with the sun shining and gorgeous weather. San Diego is known for the weather and it is easy to find some activity almost every weekend that is worth attending.

Old Town San Diego is the birthplace of California. In 1769, Gaspar de Portola and Junipero Serra founded the San Diego Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcala. There were the first Spanish settlements in Alta California which is now the state of California. In the 1820’s, San Diego started at the base of the bluff now known as Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. In 1834, the Mexican government granted San Diego a chartered town but in 1838, that status was revoked. The area was too far from water needed for importing and exporting goods. California was admitted to the United States in 1850 even though it had a small population of around 650 people. But Old Town still remained the heart of the city until development of the downtown San Diego area.

Today Old Town is a tourist area with hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and events that bring people from everywhere to visit and enjoy the flavor of the past combined with the present.

I attended an event called the TwainFest. This free and family friendly event took place August 18. This event celebrates the writings of Mark Twain. There were games for the children such as sack racing and flipping “frogs” in different booths. The booths were all a tribute to the Mark Twain writings that we grew up with.

I was fascinated with the large puppets that roamed the area. And there were even horse-drawn rides that absolutely terrified my Doberman puppy. She barked every time they circled the square where most of this event took place. I was busy taking photos with my new Nikon camera so I was wandering around watching the happy children and families. The historic costumes were a great addition to the overall atmosphere.

One of the highlights to my visit was a narrator to one of the books that Mark Twain wrote. This “actor” read this book at a podium with a crowd of people who stared in amazement at the inflections and entertainment of this reader. His voice carried well and the audience laughed out loud while listening intently.

I hope you enjoy my pictures and a glimpse into the area and history of the region. There is so much to do in San Diego and I would love to share this with you, my readers.

Newman’s Own Organic

Newman’s Own Organic

I have never thought myself an organic loving person. I was surprised at how good they can be. Newman’s Own Organic foods are in a class by themselves. They are flavorful and good to eat.

I received a collection of their products to try for myself. I was skeptical but plunged right in. I am putting their chocolates at the top of my list of candies that I recommend and eat. I loved the raspberry, caramel and peanut butter cups. Yum!!! They weren’t what I considered organic should taste like. They were rich in flavor and satisfied my sweet tooth.

My son loved the Ginger-O’s Cookies. He said that they tasted like gingerbread but with a little bite to them. He thought it was because the ingredients were natural. The Newman-O’s Creme Filled Chocolate Cookies were another favorite. They were crisp and tasty. I would have never associated them with what I considered “organic”. And the juicy dried fruits were amazing.

I am changing my opinion on organic. I love products that have ingredients I have heard of. I will try more of Newman’s Own Organic products and recommend them to everyone I know.

Patch Games Holiday Gift Hop

holiday gift guide Patch Games Review & Giveaway

Patch games are a part of my childhood. Some of these games have been around a long time but are timeless. I am happy to be reviewing one of these fun games.

IMG_3700

Dice games have always been my favorite. That is why I chose Shizzle to review. Game night will never be the same. Shizzle is for ages 8 and up. This is perfect for my family. My adult children like to get together to play games and the laughing and bonding that goes on is great.

Shizzle is a game that uses six dice. Each die has its own combination of colors and dots. The dice are thrown and then lined up for points. You want to match colors or dots in the row to get points. Getting six in a row gives you the Shizzle that you are looking for. You add up points. There is a bank in the middle that has the chips used for the points. The round ones are worth one and the square ones are worth five.
