Everyone loves an outdoor event with the sun shining and gorgeous weather. San Diego is known for the weather and it is easy to find some activity almost every weekend that is worth attending.

Old Town San Diego is the birthplace of California. In 1769, Gaspar de Portola and Junipero Serra founded the San Diego Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcala. There were the first Spanish settlements in Alta California which is now the state of California. In the 1820’s, San Diego started at the base of the bluff now known as Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. In 1834, the Mexican government granted San Diego a chartered town but in 1838, that status was revoked. The area was too far from water needed for importing and exporting goods. California was admitted to the United States in 1850 even though it had a small population of around 650 people.  But Old Town still remained the heart of the city until development of the downtown San Diego area.

Today Old Town is a tourist area with hotels, restaurants, gift shops, and events that bring people from everywhere to visit and enjoy the flavor of the past combined with the present.

I attended an event called the TwainFest. This free and family friendly event took place August 18. This event celebrates the writings of Mark Twain. There were games for the children such as sack racing and flipping “frogs” in different booths. The booths were all a tribute to the Mark Twain writings that we grew up with.

I was fascinated with the large puppets that roamed the area. And there were even horse-drawn rides that absolutely terrified my Doberman puppy. She barked every time they circled the square where most of this event took place. I was busy taking photos with my new Nikon camera so I was wandering around watching the happy children and families. The historic costumes were a great addition to the overall atmosphere.

One of the highlights to my visit was a narrator to one of the books that Mark Twain wrote. This “actor” read this book at a podium with a crowd of people who stared in amazement at the inflections and entertainment of this reader. His voice carried well and the audience laughed out loud while listening intently.

I hope you enjoy my pictures and a glimpse into the area and history of the region. There is so much to do in San Diego and I would love to share this with you, my readers.

Kids and Pets

Kids ‘n’ Pets

I received a large bottle of Kids ‘n’ Pets Stain and Odor Eliminator to review. This stuff is awesome! I have five cats, a Doberman puppy and a Chihuahua. That is a lot. And everyday I feel as if I am running a farm.
I get up in the morning and I immediately start putting my home back in order. As we all know,
pets are still active at night after you go to bed. As a matter of fact, I think that is their best time.

As I get out of bed, I am prepared to avoid stepping in spots of urine on the floor. You see, our Doberman puppy is five months old. And she tries very hard to hold it in. Most of the time she succeeds. But occasionally she can’t hold it. So we have puddles on the floor.
A long time ago I made the choice to get rid of all the carpet in my house. It was pets OR carpets. So we have tile all through the place. And when there are occasional accidents, I want it clean and odor free. So I pull out the Kids n Pets. I sop up the mess and then wipe it clean with the cleaner. And believe it or not, it doesn’t smell like a farm in my apartment.
We also had an accident on the bed. I applied the Kids ‘n’ Pets directly to the wet spot on my mattress. I then laid an absorbent towel on the spot to sop it up and left it to dry. There was no odor. Of course, we hate when these kind of things happen but we have to deal with them. I reached for this product without hesitation and applied it liberally. Nothing else that I know of would have worked.
That is not all you can do with this wonderful product. I had found a hoodie someone left behind. It smelled awful. I washed it twice and still smelled the stale smell of body odor. Then I added some of the Kids n Pets to my wash. The nasty odor was gone. I love that hoodie now.
My pets are so important to me and I love them very much. But having a healthy odor free environment makes everyone happier. Kids n Pets helps us keep it that way.

J W Pets

J. W. Pets Dog Treat Toys
 Visit us on Facebook.
I received three awesome dog treat toys from J. W. Pets. I removed them from the box to take pictures and both of my dogs had to get on the couch to see what I had. It was if they knew that these were for them.
Lady chose the treat pod toy first. She grabbed it from the couch and ran to her bed to chew on it. While it was still in the package. I couldn’t help but laugh.
I got the toy away from her and opened it. Then the struggle for ownership came into play. Both Lady and Minnie wanted it. And I hadn’t even added any treats.
This treat pod is the favorite of both dogs.
Lady couldn’t even wait for me to take it off the cardboard.
Izzy played with it on top of Minnie. Strange dog.
Lady didn’t catch on to the treat ball as easily as the treat pods.
This lead to both fighting over the same toy.
Minnie held her own with our large dog, Lady.
The dogs loved the toys, especially the treat pod. It was very well constructed and held up to the abuse given by the two dogs. I love that the dogs had to figure out how to get to the food and that the plastic was strong enough to withstand Lady while she is cutting her teeth. Believe me, she chewed on the rubber a lot and I don’t even see any teeth marks or tears. These toys will last and last. I was just hoping to make it past the teething stage. We will definitely be getting more of the durable toys for my puppy.
Next will come the toys for my five cats. Yes, they have cat toys too.

Breakfast with Lady Izzy

I am going to be exploring San Diego for dog friendly places and post about them. I will start with yesterday when we once again went to Shades in Ocean Beach. This will not be my last post for them because we love the place, the food, the view and the pet friendly atmosphere. The first thing they do is bring your dog her own bowl of fresh water that was very welcome on this super hot day.

This is the view from the patio where we can sit with Lady.
This is Lady Izzy. She is amazing and well behaved in public.
Our food was so good. We have eaten here a couple of times but look at the pictures and see what we ordered. It tasted as good as it looks.

Next time we will get Lady her own food from the menu. They serve it with a place mat and everything. One of the other “guest” was there eating her own breakfast that she enjoyed very much.

We love Shades and will visit there often. I will continue to blog about dog-friendly places and share with you all.

Safe Glow Dog Collar Review

Safe Glow Dog Collar by Dog Training Collars
I am amazed! I received the Safe Glow Dog Collar for review and I love it. The first night we had it, I was anxious to try it. I live at the beach and bay in San Diego and we just got a Doberman puppy named Lady Izzy. We are crazy about this dog.
Lady Izzy is a very social dog and we headed for the bay to start our walk. The collar was well constructed and fit her well. The materials are strong and the clasp is tight and closed easily. We turned it on and put it on the setting soft glow for a steady light. It was just getting dark. I loved the way it made her stand out.

In the evenings, most people in the area take their dogs out for a walk. We have a leash law here and our dogs are not allowed at the bay or beach after 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. So by the time 6:00 comes, we are all ready to let the dogs run and do their business.
It wasn’t quite dark when I met up with several other doggy mom’s and their dogs. The first thing they noticed was the collar. They loved it. All of them asked where I got it. I was very impressed and so were they. I could have sold several on the spot.
As the sun goes down and the evening darkens, the reflective light on this collar stands out even more. Lady is a black and brown Doberman with the black her dominate color. So the contrast is really amazing.
My dog is a very active puppy. She is kind of hard to handle and we are doing our best to train her. Her favorite thing to do is grab her leash and try to walk herself. Her next favorite thing is to roll in the grass. She is definitely giving the collar a workout. She is not interested in going in the water but since the collar isn’t completely waterproof, I wouldn’t let her go in anyway.
I let her run with her leash behind her in a field by our home. She runs really fast so it isn’t long before she is almost out of site. But the collar stands out and we can keep up with her. The ease of mind while she is wearing it is so worth it.
I was interested to learn more about the Safe Glow Dog Collar. I knew that it was well constructed and fit her nicely. It is made of wear resistance nylon. It has a strong clasp which stays closed so I don’t have to worry about it coming off. And it stands up to the rolling, shaking and running that she does. I like how well it lit up and found out that it has an LED light which uses a long life lithium battery which is easily available. LED collars are highly efficient and this helps the battery last even longer. The light has three settings: soft glow, slow flash, and fast flash. And it has a reflective stripe which adds passive reflectivity.
She is kind of an in between size but the medium fit her fine. The collar comes in sizes small, medium and large and has a retail price of $29.95.
